  6. the American West by dam builders, mobile-home denizens and
  7. ski-resort developers; of internal bleeding; in Tucson. His 1975
  8. novel The Monkey Wrench Gang chronicled the exploits of
  9. ecological guerrillas who sabotaged dams and bridges in the
  10. Southwest; the book inspired Earth First! and other hard-line
  11. groups. "The forests and mountains and desert canyons," Abbey
  12. once wrote, "are holier than our churches. Therefore let us
  13. behave accordingly."
